[ After that little exchange with Aether, Vanitas has firmly decided that Childe - Tartaglia, whatever - is annoying. Yet, the traveler still seems fond of him, as if Childe was considered a friend? Aether is too kind for his own good, Vanitas thinks, which makes him all the more glad he's headed back to where they're staying with some ingredients he grabbed for breakfast. It's a little chilly today, so he'd like to make something warm.
If Noé saw him now, he'd think Vanitas was a different person. He certainly is. He's a lot more relaxed, and he's become happier over the past few months. He'd never say that without wrinkling his nose - gross - but it's also something he can't really deny. Maybe it helps that he's no longer aggressively pursuing revenge, but the sure cause is Aether. Vanitas is still getting used to acknowledging his feelings, because shoving them down has gotten harder to do - and when he does, Aether never judges him for it. He has always accepted those feelings, good and bad, with open arms. Therefore, if Vanitas sees the opportunity to return the favor, he feels like he'd be remiss not to.
He returns, mindful to be quiet in case Aether is asleep. He would start on breakfast now, but if his lover isn't awake, the food will get cold, defeating the point of making a warm breakfast. Plus, in light of that little spark of jealousy, he's exceptionally motivated to make something good now. This in particular is best when it's a little hot. He'll sit on his hands and wait until later.
Instead of minding his business in the living room, though, he decides to enter the bedroom, where Aether may or may not be asleep. It seems like he might be, so Vanitas shrugs out of his jacket and hangs it up before he moves over to the bed. He crawls in and lays down next to Aether, arm moving to gently wrap around the traveler's waist so he can be pulled closer. ]
[The midnight spar with Childe was merciless as always. The ginger is always relentless when it comes to fighting, but once their match was over, he did offer Aether a meal as well as to wrap any of his injuries. The guy may be a lot but Aether can't bring himself to dislike him.
Still, he is more than happy to return home. His muscles ache and he wants to sleep. His little conversation with Vanitas was a nice way to relax and it brought a smile to his face. Even if the house they're staying at is only their temporary refuge, with Vanitas around it feels like "home".
Aether collapses onto the bed with a smile and closes his eyes. He should probably stay awake until his partner is back, but he's so very tired. Vanitas won't mind if he takes a nap, right?
Before he knows it, Aether doses off, his sleep completely undisturbed. He doesn't even awake when the door open and Vanitas crawls onto the bed. His sleep is peaceful, no nightmares. He only stirs slightly when there are arms wrapping around him and bringing him closer. A small noise escapes his lips, but he only snuggles closer to Vanitas, almost instinctively. It's a familiar warmth that draws him in. A warmth of a person he completely trusts.]
[ It's a good thing Vanitas is used to living in temporary spaces, because adjusting to a traveling lifestyle really doesn't bother him in the slightest. "Home" as a place is irrelevant, because as long as Aether is here, he'll be comfortable and relaxed like he is now. He's fine with Aether being perfectly still, and it's very convenient that the guy is sleeping like a rock because he doesn't have to know that Vanitas is here, but when he snuggles closer...
Oh, that's one way to get his heart racing. Likewise, Vanitas feels a familiar warmth surge through him, and not just because his partner is sleeping next to him. Aether has such a way with dismantling the walls Vanitas has put up, making him act in unusual ways that he never does with anyone else. Being away from prying eyes has made it infinitely easier for him to do things like bury his nose into Aether's hair, like he's doing right now while he's holding onto the traveler like a lifeline.
There is no imminent danger, and there is nothing bringing Vanitas further from being human and closer to being something otherworldly like back home - but he clings to his lover sometimes, because he needs that reminder that if he were to change, if he were to no longer be human, it wouldn't matter. Aether would still be here.
Time passes, and all he does for those long moments is lie next to Aether in silence. Eventually, he brushes the other's bangs back so he can lightly brush his lips against Aether's forehead. Will it wake him up? Vanitas hopes not. He just wants to be a little indulgent, is all. ]
[He continues to sleep, safe and warm in the other's arms. There's nothing he needs to do, nowhere he needs to go. And so Aether doesn't move much, peacefully resting close to Vanitas until his partner presses a soft kiss to his forehead. That's the moment when Aether shifts again. His arms reach out to his lover, wrapping around him. His head buries only closer into the warmth next to him, like he's just found himself a perfect pillow.
Aether continuous to sleep. His breathing is even. It's almost funny that nothing seems to wake him up, when usually he's more aware of his surroundings.
But... this is "home". He's home now. There's no need for him to worry.]
Oh? Do you? [ Heh. The water is pretty nice and warm, buuuut. ] It'll be easier to hold you if we move to the bed. Just saying.
[ He is also teasing, given how he accentuates that with a little shrug. He's definitely in a better mood, and even gives Aether's waist a little squeeze. Days like these are getting more and more common with how comfortable he's grown around his partner - and Vanitas would like the same for Aether, too. He may not voice it or make that as obvious as he should, but by the way he urges Aether to stand up so they can move, it's clear that he meant what he said about moving to the bed. Get ready to be spoiled, Traveler.
He'll let the tub drain in the meantime, and move to wrap a towel around his waist. His clothes are in the other room since he wasn't expecting an invite to the bath, and before he goes to get dressed, he gives Aether a small kiss on the cheek. ]
[There's a soft giggle as he's moved to stand up.]
Right, right. [Vanitas seems really eager! But Aether is planning how to spoil him more as well. He doesn't want to be the only one having a good time.
Aether takes a towel and carefully dries himself. He'd do the same for Vanitas, but the other seems to already take care of himself. And even gives a small kiss to Aether.]
Anytime.
[It's nice to see Vanitas in such a good mood. Aether is glad he dragged him into the bath.
The traveler quickly puts on a light shirt and some pants, letting his hair loose to allow it to dry out further. Then he exists the bathroom and makes his way towards Vanitas to catch him by the hand and lead him to the bedroom.]
[ While Aether gets dressed, Vanitas slips into some plain loungewear, which is very simple in comparison to his regular, nonsensical outfit. He's busy fixing his hair a little when Aether beats him to the punch and reaches for his hand. Vanitas turns around and smiles, allows himself to be lead. He sits at the edge of it and leaves plenty of space for Aether to join him. They can lie down if the traveler wishes, but he figures he'll start here and put an arm around Aether's waist again.
Now that they have some quiet, maybe this'll be a good time to learn more about his partner. There's still so much that they haven't shared with each other, he realizes, though Vanitas is not the sort of person to talk about himself unless someone asks. He doesn't mind doing the asking, though. He's a curious kind of guy. ]
You've talked about your sister before. [ Many times, actually. ] What caused the two of you to be separated?
I examined your horoscope today, Vanitas. Whatever it is that you find offensive about it, you should refrain from taking it out on him. It isn't his fault that he has a sweet tooth.
2. I'll remind you that you are *not* a vampire. Is it really necessary to leave such crude marks? You are fortunate my collar covers them.
3. I suppose you can be a gentleman sometimes... Thank you for paying for dinner. [ pause ] And before you say it, *yes* I could have afforded it myself.
4. Don't laugh, but I did look into our compatibility. Would you like to know the results?
My dear astrologist, what makes you think I'm judging him so harshly? I'm not a fan of sweets, and I'm also not a fan of how often he asks me to make them for him. That's all there is to it.
[ Is it though. How did she know that today was a day where Noé was obsessively begging him for more tarte tatin. ]
You know, Mona, if you wanted me to make them for you instead, you could've just said so.
Have I been nice? I just find it hard to be crass around you, is all.
[ And he means that, because it is difficult - pointless, even. He's had those moments with her but Tohru always manages to counter it with kindness. ]
Now, you should be worried if you receive a message from me at 3am, let alone see me at a Denny's. Or a nightclub, for that matter. I have no interest in that sort of thing.
[ If she asked him if he meant it in a good way, he'd hesitate to answer. He does, surely. He appreciates her kindness more than even he realizes. ]
You don't need to call for help. Just call me directly instead.
Don't worry about it, though. That's a problem to concern yourself with only if it happens - and I can handle myself, so you likely won't even know it's happening.
[ Mm. That last part has been sent but he's unsure if that was the greatest decision on his part. The existence of vampires is something most people aren't ready to learn about, and they are nothing but tales of old at this point. ]
[ Vanitas' entrance is quiet. He slips inside their current residence with a large paper bag of...flowers? It looks like some Brilliant Chrysanthemum flowers sticking out, and he places the bag on the nearest counter top. ]
...Aether?
[ He calls out to him, and he looks nervous, almost sheepish when he seeks him out. In his hands is a flower crown, made of those flowers - one that isn't perfectly made, but it looks solidly good nevertheless. He's frowning, doesn't move to put it on Aether yet, but he has it. ]
[He's sitting somewhere in the corner of the room, gaze fixed on the window like a lonely bird watching the sky beyond the cage. His thoughts continue to drift to his sister, to the overwhelming sense of unease, helplessness, that he somehow failed as a brother, because he can't puzzle out what his twin is thinking. That he failed as a "savior" becasue he could do nothing to save that one girl who relied on him.
He can hear the door open and he can hear the voice calling him, but he doesn't turn around. Not yet. It's only when he spots something in the reflection of the window when he turns around.
A flower crown.
Aether blinks once, then twice, his eyes seem to be a little more wet than before. He takes a deep breath, then slowly makes it towards Vanitas. His hands are shaky when he reaches for the crown.]
...You made it? For me?
[He looks at it like he's just received the greatest treasure in the entire universe. It brings back memories to when he and his sister where children, to a simpler time when it felt like everything in the world was good.]
[ At first, he's ready to just leave it for Aether to get to it later, because it doesn't seem like he's ready to talk right now. But then Aether's heading towards him, hands shaking - and Vanitas draws it back ever so slightly so he can gently put it on Aether's head instead. ]
I did. I thought you might like it.
[ And he thinks Aether does, with how he looks so touched. Vanitas would like to reach out and do something, embrace him, anything, but he's never seen his partner quite like this before. Maybe Aether needs space. There are still flowers in the bag he brought home with him, but whatever that's about can wait.
Vanitas quickly brushes Aether's bangs out of his forehead and presses a gentle kiss to it; then, he steps back and lets his hands fall to his sides. ]
That's all. I won't interrupt you if you need time.
Glad that's settled, though I'm inclined to get a haircut now so your baguette-wielding friend doesn't bash me over the head next time. Though...you referred to her as a "follower"? What are you, some sort of god?
now that she knows you're not me, you should be fine. ...probably. at least for a while, until she gets miffed again. but yup! I'm a god of Fortune and Happiness! that's luck, not money, btw. I can't make you rich, unfortunately
[A god who get beaned with bread by his follower. Not very dignified, huh...]
...So if you are who you say you are, do you have a way to prove it?
[ Not very dignified but you know what, that makes this guy seem more human so it's fine. Vanitas isn't entirely sold on the god thing though. Needs proof!! ]
[ the life of a student council president is always hectic, but this month in particular has been especially busy for riddle. while transfer students aren't unusual in themselves (he himself is a second-year transfer), they normally occur in the beginning of the year. to get a new group of students a third of the way into the semester is highly unusual-- not to mention disruptive to riddle, whose schedule is planned right down to the minute.
as per etiquette, each new student is called to his office in order to receive their schedules and other necessary documents, and for the most part they all seemed to be good potential students, tolerable at the very least. the same couldn't be said of one student in particular who failed to show up to his summon.
vanitas.
riddle makes a note to remember his name so he can properly lecture him later. thankfully the absence doesn't put a huge dent in plans for the day, and before he knows it, most of the morning comes and goes.
as fastidious as he is about the school's rules, sometimes even riddle finds himself needing a breather, an escape from his own self-imposed oppression. during those times, his hiding place of choice is always the school roof where students technically aren't allowed. he expects this lunchtime visit to be the same as any other, but once he emerges from the door and steps into the overcast autumn world, he's shocked to find someone else loitering about. someone unfamiliar. ]
You there.
[ with his usual stern tone signalling the beginning of a lecture, riddle crosses his arms and approaches the mysterious student, a frown on his otherwise delicate features. ]
The rooftop is forbidden to students. It is against the rules for you to be up here.
[ Vanitas answers to no one, let alone the student council president. Those types tend to be domineering and annoying, people who don't allow him to do as he pleases, so he's decided to do just that. Transferring here wasn't exactly what he wanted but it's what had to happen, so he doesn't feel any sense of obligation to answer Riddle's call, nor does he really care about getting in trouble. He likes learning; he doesn't like feeling like he's in a prison for eight hours a day.
Vanitas is up on the roof, lurking in a high place as per usual, leaning over the guard rail and gazing out at the city ahead. His expression is nonchalant up until he hears the door to the stairwell open, followed by a rather irritating voice. Vanitas only turns his head towards the source slightly before he decides to face Riddle fully. There's a smirk on his face. Guess who isn't taking this seriously? ]
Oh? Says who? The faculty, or is this just an arbitrary rule from our little student council president?
[ Quite an introduction to Vanitas, isn't it? He gives Riddle a little shrug. ]
I don't see why I should be forbidden from coming up here either way.
[ riddle's urge to smack that smug look off the other boy's face is strong, but he doubts he can worm his way out of another assault charge, and he's dealt with far worse delinquents by now, so the urge is stifled for the time being.
instead, he crosses his arms, and juts his chin up with an intense frown, scorn utterly radiating from his tiny body. ]
As a matter of fact, it is a school rule. Not only that, but it is a rule of common sense. Roofs are dangerous places to loiter about, especially when one is alone.
[ like, if there's a fire down below, your ass is grass??? he's just about to continue his lecture in order to say as much, but that nonchalant shrug pisses him off so much he loses his train of thought for a moment. ]
It is not just you who is forbidden. As I said, all students are. Rather than waste my precious time by arguing with me, I suggest you heed my words and leave this place right this instant.
[ A week ago, a girl had approached Vanitas, swinging a thick loaf of bread, thinking he was someone else. A lookalike, even. It had resolved as mundanely as it could have (he was indignant but after the misunderstanding was cleared up, he simply went on his way). She'd certainly left an impression on him nevertheless, one that he doesn't think he'll forget even if it was purely accidental.
Now, in the present, Vanitas makes a trip to the same bakery she grabbed her loaf of bread from. He's here for bread, too, but he'd been very diligent about making sure she was nowhere to be seen. He'd rather not relieve that incident again, thank you very much. He's careful to sneak into the shop, but the moment he does...
...there's a familiar face on the other end of the very small room they're in. Vanitas lays eyes on Hiyori and lets out a muffled shriek, eyes going wide as he feels his blood boil again. ]
[ as if she has a built-in sensor (it's the nose) for those with strikingly blue eyes, hiyori instinctively glances toward the cheerful bell announcing another customer, oblivious to who has entered her life once more.
oh no. HIM, AGAIN.
she's already embarrassed herself enough smacking a baguette into a total stranger. and, SURE, hiyori was quick to apologize profusely despite any Obnoxious Energy coming from him or what he did to deserve such behavior, but
she has enough dark-haired, blue-eyed troublemakers in her life THANK YOU. she tries hiding behind the next person in line but it's no use. blue meets her burgundy and she jolts and looks away.
it would be best to walk away but she really, really wants these croissants stuffed with chocolate and she has enough to get enough for everyone AND SHE IS NEXT IN LINE THAT she is staying - ]
Excuse me?!
[ immediately defending herself, whirling towards him as vanitas makes another spectacle in this innocent bakery. performance number two. ]
I, I apologized. [ she hisses from her spot. ] Why are you back here? And at the same time as me... again...
[ HE'S BACK. But more importantly, so is she. This should be an ordinary occurrence with anyone else, but Vanitas is not ordinary and brings trouble wherever he goes. He is a master at making a fuss in public, this is no different, and he's going to bring this girl down with him, apparently. ]
Because unlike you, I'm buying bread for cooking!
[ Which is absolutely what she probably intended to do the first time around, but you know. Yato exists...so does Vanitas....... ]
And don't talk like I intended to run into you again! If anything, I'd rather be avoiding you right now!!!

Glad that's settled, though I'm inclined to get a haircut now so your baguette-wielding friend doesn't bash me over the head next time. Though...you referred to her as a "follower"? What are you, some sort of god?
[ haha surprise ]

[A god who get beaned with bread by his follower. Not very dignified, huh...]

[ Not very dignified but you know what, that makes this guy seem more human so it's fine. Vanitas isn't entirely sold on the god thing though. Needs proof!! ]

"i know what u are........"
as per etiquette, each new student is called to his office in order to receive their schedules and other necessary documents, and for the most part they all seemed to be good potential students, tolerable at the very least. the same couldn't be said of one student in particular who failed to show up to his summon.
vanitas.
riddle makes a note to remember his name so he can properly lecture him later. thankfully the absence doesn't put a huge dent in plans for the day, and before he knows it, most of the morning comes and goes.
as fastidious as he is about the school's rules, sometimes even riddle finds himself needing a breather, an escape from his own self-imposed oppression. during those times, his hiding place of choice is always the school roof where students technically aren't allowed. he expects this lunchtime visit to be the same as any other, but once he emerges from the door and steps into the overcast autumn world, he's shocked to find someone else loitering about. someone unfamiliar. ]
You there.
[ with his usual stern tone signalling the beginning of a lecture, riddle crosses his arms and approaches the mysterious student, a frown on his otherwise delicate features. ]
The rooftop is forbidden to students. It is against the rules for you to be up here.
bless you ty for this
Vanitas is up on the roof, lurking in a high place as per usual, leaning over the guard rail and gazing out at the city ahead.
I don't see why I should be forbidden from coming up here either way.
god you are so welcome
instead, he crosses his arms, and juts his chin up with an intense frown, scorn utterly radiating from his tiny body.
Rather than waste my precious time by arguing with me, I suggest you heed my words and leave this place right this instant.
spicy shoujo romance incoming
pretend it did not, in fact, take me 40 fckn years to respond!
PRETEND IT DIDN'T TAKE ME EVEN LONGER...
BRUH I THINK YOU HAVE KIND OF A VALID REASON LMFAOOOOOO 😫 (are u doin ok are u safe......)
SCREAMS I'M FINE TY
@wwtd
You! Why are you back here?!
[ FORGIVE HIM, HIYORI...he is a bit jumpy.... ]
✨✨✨
oh no. HIM, AGAIN.
she's already embarrassed herself enough smacking a baguette into a total stranger. and, SURE, hiyori was quick to apologize profusely despite any Obnoxious Energy coming from him or what he did to deserve such behavior, but
she has enough dark-haired, blue-eyed troublemakers in her life THANK YOU. she tries hiding behind the next person in line but it's no use. blue meets her burgundy and she jolts and looks away.
it would be best to walk away but she really, really wants these croissants stuffed with chocolate and she has enough to get enough for everyone AND SHE IS NEXT IN LINE THAT she is staying - ]
Excuse me?!
[ immediately defending herself, whirling towards him as vanitas makes another spectacle in this innocent bakery. performance number two. ]
I, I apologized. [ she hisses from her spot. ] Why are you back here? And at the same time as me... again...
[ suspicious. ]
runs back here
Because unlike you, I'm buying bread for cooking!
[ Which is absolutely what she probably intended to do the first time around, but you know. Yato exists...so does Vanitas....... ]
And don't talk like I intended to run into you again! If anything, I'd rather be avoiding you right now!!!
[ AND YET. HE'S STILL HERE. ]
opens my arms
